Big Pool Sprint Triathlon

This past Saturday was the Big Pool Sprint Triathlon held in Garden City benefiting their local YMCA.  Want to be encouraged?  Want to step out of your comfort zone?  Want to have fun?  Then I highly encourage you to dip your feet into trying something different, such as a triathlon especially participating as a team!

About three weeks ago Stacey asked both Karen and I if we would consider being her team members as she would like to do the 5k running portion.  I shared with Stacey that I would if she could talk Karen into it!  With-in about 24 hours we had a team and both Karen and I began training for our legs of the event as we are runners, not tri athletes.

The morning of the event my husband came in and said I had better pack a rain jacket.  There was lots of lightening back off towards Garden and did I think they would go ahead and hold the event?  I assured him that I was positive the event would be held, it may be late but they would still go with their plan.  When Stacey, Karen and I went up to get our numbers placed on our arms, I began to think, ok, this is really happening, the Sole Sisters are kicking it up a notch! (The three of us are part of a small group of women in the Satanta area called "Sole Sisters".)  We had to remind one another that this was totally for fun and to enjoy the morning.

I feel like I can speak for all three of us, that we had a blast!!  We chatted later in the day and Stacey came up with our plan for the next three years.  We would continue with our Sole Sister team for two more years, allowing each of us to rotate and get comfortable being uncomfortable.  So 12 months from now the game plan is:  I swim 400m, Stacey bikes the 12.5 miles and Karen will be our 5k runner.  When all three of us have done each leg of the tri, the following year we are all signing up do it as a "one horse show".

**Leg 1:  Karen swimming 400m in a 50m outdoor pool!

**Leg 2:  Yolanda coming in to the bike transition area after 12.5 miles of rolling hills

**Leg 3:  Stacey finishing a strong 5k!

It was so cool because the event organizers were cheering us on as well as spectators!  After wards several came up to introduce themselves and to encourage us.  That goes a long way!!!  An extra little tidbit, the three of us are all training for our very first full marathons.  I am running mine on October 6th in Portland, Oregon while both Stacey & Karen are running theirs the following weekend in Wichita, Kansas.

What a great experience! And the weather was PERFECT! Comfort "bubbles" are meant to be popped.
